Playing All 3 Nights

Long recognized as the preeminent trance-fusion band in the United States, the Disco Biscuits have forged a new path in the improvisational music scene, leaving in their wake dozens of imitators while leading the charge in the now dominating live-electronic touring circuit. In the twelve years that the Biscuits have been around they have created a huge following and garnered a great deal of critical success.

Spin magazine has dubbed them the "forefathers of Trance-fusion", while Entertainment Weekly called 1998's "Uncivilized Area" the #1 Jamband Album of All Time. "Señor Boombox," released in 2002, was named one of the Top Ten Jam Albums Ever by Guitar Player and 2002's Best Studio Album by Relix. Highlights of this last year include playing to 25,000 people at Bonnaroo and 20,000 at Lollapalooza, the hosting of their 5th annual Camp Bisco (whose line-up included The Roots, Brazilian Girls, and Thievery Corporation) at Hunter Mountain, and the release of their "Caterpillar" video on MTV Latin America. TDB sold out 15 shows in a row on their Spring tour & closed out the year with another nine sold-out shows, culminating in a three show New Years run, Progressions, shot in an HD documentary depicting the band's rise from club/theatre band to arena headliner in the Biscuits' hometown of Philly.

More than just musicians, tDB are also actively involved in community efforts. They worked alongside the Dave Matthews Band, the Dead, and Members of Phish to register 50,000 voters while on tour with HeadCount (a voter-registration organization co-chaired by tDB bassist Marc Brownstein). They also collected 5,000 lbs of food in two months for Conscious Alliance's 2006 food drive, and raised over $35,000 towards relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina. While tDB have been at the forefront of the jamband touring scene for over a decade, selling out the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC for three straight New Years (2003-5), 2006 saw them reach new heights and this year only promises more.       www.discobiscuits.com

The jam crowd hoisted the band up on their proverbial shoulders as heroes, heirs to the Phish throne. Fans reveled in Umphrey’s flair for inventive improvisation, incredible covers, and unpredictable moments. The band had also developed an uncanny visual language onstage that includes dozens of unspoken cues — a happy face, for example, symbolizes a major key, while a sad face indicates a minor one — that make their signature “jazz odysseys” and “Jimmy Stewarts” legendary on the jam scene. These cues manage to keep things tight and prevent their improv interludes from spiraling into hippie jam orbit. The band retains space, breath, and patience in performances, yet maintain masterly control in the process.

These days, Umphrey’s spends half the year on the road habitually flooring audiences. Their anything-goes musicianship, humor, and good-nature all make remarkable entertainment. The band shuttles between styles with precision, from straight-up pop and rock to jazz, prog-metal, and classical. If you can name it, chances are Umphrey’s can play it.         www.umphreys.com

Live Band Set

Joining us will be a live set from psychedelic funk masters, Hallucinogen in Dub only ever seen once before on stage at Glastonbury with Ott and Simon Posford ( Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Younger Brother) on guitars and effects, and with the legendary Youth (producer of The Verve, Embrace & Celtic Cross) on bass. With Twisted's usual reputation for dance music events based around electronic performance, this is aspiring to be something different and promises to be a truly unique and original performance by the band, who is strongly influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and The Grateful Dead. They are planning to get back in the studio very shortly to get some new material together and also to add some of the epic Celtic Cross flavour to their new set. This is a one off performance... do not miss it!       www.twisted.co.uk

Live

Erez Eisen and Amit Duvdevani (aka Duvdev)—has been the leading group within the global psy-trance scene for nearly a decade. Incorporating pumping, bad-ass grooves and infectious melodies and live instruments and vocals into their songs, they’ve performed live—a feat that many of their DJ peers aspire to accomplish—for well over a million people around the globe.

The band’s energetic live show has triumphed at some of the world’s biggest and most important music festivals (OMIX Festival in Mexico, Miami’s Ultra Festival, Tribe in Sao Paulo, among countless others), and they continue to regularly sell-out top clubs such as the Brixton Academy in London, Toronto’s Koolhaus at the Government, and Avalon in New York and Los Angeles. Their success as an electronic music band on the global concert circuit has translated into record sales in excess of 150,000 albums over the course of six acclaimed independent albums. Not bad for two guys from Haifa who started producing music mostly to escape boredom.       www.infected-mushroom.com

With over 80 years experience collectively Simon Posford and Raja Ram are more than qualified for the exploration into the unclassifiable music frontiers they have ventured into; ‘SHPONGLE’ is a new world of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with the computer wizardry of Simon Posford's studio production.      www.shpongle.com

Somewhere back in the mid-90's a fresh faced Brazilian ex-pat living in the UK decided he was going to put down his harmonica, pick up a sampler, and name himself after a Stephen King novel. The resulting album, Cujo's 'Adventures In Foam' (released on Ninebar records, later reissued on Ninja Tune) signaled Amon Tobin's entry into the world of music. Well actually there's a pre-Cujo project also, but everybody knows not to talk about it... but if you get Amon really drunk... actually no, even then he won't play it for you.

Immediately upon hearing this record, the powers that be at Ninja Tune signed him up to record as Amon Tobin, and he quickly went to work on his debut 'Bricolage'. If you'll recall, these were the 'trip-hop' years for electronic music, where any clown with a sampler and a collection of Blue Note records could knock off some half-baked boutique hotel background music. But 'Bricolage' shone above all that. Although employing a marriage of jazz and beats, it stretched it further by bringing in elements of bossa-nova, batucada, and jungle, and combining it with a sense of song-writing that elevated it above the standards of that aforementioned scene. I mean hell, it has a song on it which was inspired by Amon taking a piss on his neighbors bike after some domestic living dispute (‘A Day In My arden’)...this was clearly no good vibes jazzy beats guy Ninja had signed.       www.amontobin.com

Born to Jamaican parents in South Wimbledon, London, on January 14, 1965, Ricky Walters was blinded by broken glass as an infant and took to wearing an eyepatch from an early age. He emigrated with his family to the Bronx in the late '70s and attended the La Guardia High School of Music & Art, where he became friends with future rapper Dana Dane. The two formed the Kangol Crew, and began performing in hip-hop battles around the city. At one 1984 battle in the Bronx, Rick met Doug E. Fresh, and began playing with his Get Fresh Crew (which also included Chill Will and Barry Bee). Fresh's number four R&B hit, "The Show," exploded just one year later, and MC Ricky D. — as Rick was then known — leaped to a solo contract two years later, after an acquaintance with Russell Simmons led to his signing to Def Jam Records, the biggest label in hip-hop at the time.

Groundbreaking, charismatic, stylish, distinctive - these are just some of the words that have been used to describe Lyrics Born. With a career spanning over a decade, Lyrics Born began as an underground MC who while in college at UC Davis met up with fellow Bay Area artists DJ Shadow, Blackalicious and Lateef The Truth Speaker. This tight knit crew joined forces with famed author Jeff Chang and MTV producer Joseph Patel to form the seminal independent label, Solesides. In 1997, SoleSides released Lyrics Born's first full length debut with Lateef entitled Latyrx: The Album. With the success of Latyrx, LB and co. reinvented the model for independent hip-hop record labels, as the album went on to sell 100,000 copies worldwide.       www.lyricsborn.com

Deep within the English countryside lie a number of brilliant music producers. One such unfashionable but extremely talented artist is Ott, best friend of Simon Posford aka Hallucinogen and previous editor of the Shpongle albums. Reclusive genius Ott is no stranger to the studio. He has for the last 20 years been producing arranging and recording some of the most famous artists including Sinead O'Connor, The Orb, and Brian Eno. Working in a wide range of the best studios in the land from SARM East and West, Real World, and Ridge Farm to Foel in Wales. He has been interviewed in the producers/engineers bible Sound on Sound and is currently managed by Strongroom Management UK.

He continues to work with many famous artists and along his travels met up with master producer Simon Posford aka Hallucinogen, editing Shpongle. After hearing his studio skills Simon commissioned Ott to make the modern dub album 'Hallucinogen In Dub' as an antithesis to his own hurtling psy-trance music. The results are as you shall see, startling, a stunning example of modern dub and one that is sure to be massive with all dance music and ambient music fans across the globe. It's a dub circus with flecks of the original souping in and out, and the effect is truly psychedelic. Spiritual Antiseptic uses the original's cutup vocals with a more traditional dub arrangement - melodica, clattering drums, and reverb to hell and back. Twisting and turning, the way the main LSD melody surfaces is pure sonic poetry, and certainly gets those brain chemicals flowing. Finally Angelic Particles - with swirling vocals and sweet guitar (specially recorded by Simon Posford) creating a sort of timeless dub full of rich psychedelic harping back to Floyd, Gong and the Grateful Dead. This is an absolute triumph - it's original, it's brave, and the sounds are truly transporting making this a release that truly deserves the 'psychedelic' tag.      twisted.co.uk/artists/ott/

The Bays are Andy Gangadeen, Chris Taylor, Jamie Odell and Simon Richmond. Their manifesto of pure improvisation and raw creative synergy is causing major tremors at all levels of the music industry, challenging many of its most entrenched attitudes about bands and live performance. Through their relentless gig schedule and tireless devotion to their radical musical ethic, The Bays have ripped up the rulebook and debunk musical convention wherever they play.

What drives this band is their need to communicate with the audience in a way not possible with most live bands. There are no songs to perform, theres no album to promote and there is no hidden commercial agenda. The Bays only perform live, they never rehearse, they dont have a set-list, they dont use sequencers and they couldnt ever do the same performance twice. Its all about the moment an experience that exists between the band and the audience for only one moment in time.

John Peel, following The Bays first Maida Vale live performance: Fantastic! Amazing!! Im about to go on holiday and about this time next week Ill either be in New Zealand or on a life raft in shark-infested waters off the Solomon Islands, well have just eaten our last stewardess and some buggerll be playing Danny Boy on the harmonica and Ill think that I havent completely wasted my time.      www.thebays.com

Members from The New Deal & Brothers Past

the New Deal, a pioneer of the "livetronica" sound and a mainstay in both the Electronic and Jamband scenes for close to eight years, was recently faced with the possibility of having to cancel their upcoming California tour due to Dan Kurtz's increasingly busy schedule with his new pop project Dragonette.

To counter the nebulous months to come, drummer Darren Shearer and keyboard player Jamie Shields have developed The JOIN - a musical unit that will host a revolving door of musicians depending on what area of the world they're in as well as what show setting they find themselves a part of. The May west coast tour will feature David Murphy (STS9), and will kick off the New Deal's alter ego digression.  The JOIN will soon announce more shows and exciting musical concoctions. Looks for upcoming runs for The JOIN featuring Marc Brownstein & Aron Magner (the Disco Biscuits) and Tom Hamilton & Clay Parnell (Brothers Past) to be announced soon.

The New Deal's music, rooted in improvisation, is based on creating and developing actual songs and themes in the moment. This new project will allow them to spread their wings and share this creative ethic with other musicians from many disciplines and backgrounds.      :: nowhere ::

...And it is a cover band?!?! To the unsuspecting eye, maybe, but to the trained ear, it is a rock juggernaut, as Marco and Joe team up with old friends Scott Metzger (Rana, Danjaboots) and Dave Dreiwitz (WEEN) to form BUSTLE IN YOUR HEDGEROW. The foursome have wowed crowds around New York for a couple of years now, after being created on a dare from Flaco, joining together when their schedules allow to drop the ROCK on the city's live music aficianados. Recently, the band took the show on the road for a smattering of one-off performances, including a beyond sold-out post-Lollapalooza 2006 party that left the Abbey Pub in Chicago in shambles. Now, the band is ready to take this show on the road!

What exactly is this show, you ask? It is a big, loud, dirty ROCK & ROLL CONCERT! Liquor? The bars are stocked! Groupies? We'll take 'em if you've got 'em, shrieks and screams of Robert Plant? Nope, but we do have Marco Benevento's tricked out Wurlitzer covering the lines! Aleister Crowley? Still dead, as far as we know, but we've got Szufranowski on our team!      myspace.com/bustle

Gregg Gills has built up a party-obsessed cult following as Girl Talk over the past 5 years. The project began with Gillis tearing apart mainstream music using digital signal processing (DSP) and re-piecing various songs back together into glitchy avant-garde renditions of pop music. This cut-and-paste train wreck style is what comprises Girl Talk's debut release Secret Diary (Illegal Art, 2002). He also developed the initial incarnation of his self-proclaimed "over the top" live show during this era, complete with synchronized dance squads, outfit changes, and plenty of crowd interaction/participation. These flashy performances were a response to the increasingly widespread sit-behind-a-laptop-and-look-bored-while-simultaneously-boring-the- audience-style laptop shows.       www.girl-talk.net

Live Band Set

He was guitarist and synth player with acclaimed but obscure, gonzo electro-punk band Six Finger Satellite, who began formulating their blend of rigidly mechanised disco beats, oddly sumptuous synth melodies and razor-shredded guitar work in the early 90s. The brutish but groovy result suggested a cross between Devo, Kraftwerk and Big Black. Then, America was mired in grunge, the famous French robots were still in short pants and the 'punk-funk revival' was in the unimaginable future. Six Finger Satellite were just too far ahead of their time and perished accordingly.

As a result, Juan MacLean nearly gave up. Not just on music, but on life itself. Creative disillusionment and personal despair aggravated by years of drug addiction (he started shooting coke at an early age, then moved on to heroin) had, toward the end of last century, brought him to his knees. Then, as the world prepared to party at the millenium's turn, two shifts occurred. First, he quit Six Finger Satellite, got the hell out of New York City and decided to try doing something rather more socially constructive with his life than just playing in a band. Secondly, he found himself being bugged by Six Finger Satellite's former live soundman. But this guy wasn’t after money or the return of borrowed gear or any one of the countless other things that usually prompt such reconnections. MacLean was being hassled by his old friend James Murphy to start making music again.       www.thejuanmaclean.com

They have been playing at clubs and festivals nation wide. In addition to success with their own shows, ADP is quickly making a name for themselves as THE premier backing band in hip-hop, appearing on the Tonight Show with The Game and touring with GZA of Wu-Tang Clan and Slick Rick.       www.adamdeitch.com

Zilla is a group of musicians with the live musical experience in mind. The Boulder, Colorado based trio is a 100% organic, improvised creation – both on stage and in the studio. Relying on their uncanny ability to listen and incorporate their individual talents into a group-focused brand of live electronic dance music, Zilla is turning heads with their rare breed of rock-solid beats, huge bass, and uncontrollable musical fury.  The result is spontaneity, flow, deep grooves and a damn good dance party.

Each Zilla concert proves to be a completely unique occurrence, with even the band members having no idea where the music will take them night after night. And Zilla’s studio approach is the same.  For their debut studio album, all iZ, the material they recorded was entirely improvised.       www.zillamusic.com

Holy Fuck are creating a legacy based on near stupidity. It’s a simple concept, to mimic modern electronic music without using modern fail-safes like laptops and programmed backing tracks… and of course to make people freak out and smash stuff. So for last year’s NXNE festival they armed themselves with a drum set, a bass guitar, a myriad of toy keyboards, guitar peddles, mixers, and even a 35 mm film synchronizer and hit the stage, without even rehearsing. Luckily they remembered to bring extra batteries. Now just over a year later they have played super-festivals like Coachella, CMJ, SXSW, POP Montreal, Montreal Jazz, All Tomorrow’s Parties, and Vegoose. They have hooked up and collaborated frequently with Anti Pop Consortium MC, Beans. They still do it with the same duct taped keyboards, film editing gear, still without rehearsing. The line up continues to mutate but maintains its core: Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Kevin Lynn, and alternating drummers Glenn Milchem and Loel Campbell.      www.holyfuckmusic.com

Jason Hann and Michael Travis (percussionist and drummer from the band The String Cheese Incident) compose this brand new 100% improvised live breakbeat, trip-hop, house, and drum n' bass project. Drawing from the ethos of some of the great DJ's and computer artists of the world, they use cutting edge technology to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment, with the undeniable power of live drums. The music is all created on the spot, recorded, then mixed and remixed live to create an ever evolving musical experience. Since the project is 100% improvised, every night promises to be a unique dance experience. Hann and Travis play different roles in this band than in SCI. Jason plays the drum kit, percussion and sampler, while Michael is in charge of the tonal elements, playing bass, guitar, and keyboards, and hand percussion and live mixing.       www.eotomusic.com

After promoting and touring for their debut release, Morning Stanzas, in 2005, the band (Christian Celaya, Brian Joyce, Eiko Peck, and Steve Bryant) began experimenting with different moods and textures in their writing.  A return to Christian and Brian’s early influences of rave and house music and culture (and all the trouble you can imagine they got into), as well as a deepening emphasis on the hip hop and drum and bass sound that Eiko and Steve had been cultivating over time, saw the band develop a unique blend of ambient, emotionally melodic guitar and synth instrumentation “mashing up” with tight, bottom-heavy, ass-shakin’ rhythm section grooves.  Soon a number of new songs took on a more moody, sexy, groove-oriented dance vibe.  An album was taking shape.

So in the summer of 2006, Benzos began recording down in Baltimore at WrightWay Studios with Anthony Ranere (Lake Trout) and Steve Wright.  The process was exhaustive for everyone involved (when is making an album not?), and by the end of the sessions Benzos had recorded numerous songs, effectively capturing this new sound that had been evolving.

The result?  2007’s Branches, a collection of tight, melodic songs, a variety of mood and texture, and enough thump to shake it.  With the band’s increasing emphasis on what they call “live remixing,” a sort of “snapshot” of their music that’s geared toward the dance set, as well as their increasingly explosive regular live set, along with the release of Branches, 2007 on Stinky Records looks like the kind of year that Benzos will have little problem finding “where to go from here.”       www.benzosmusic.com

"The Afromotive fuse the polyrhythms of Afrobeat with funk and extended improv... If you can stand still listening to their music, check your pulse- you might be dead." Jack Silverman, Nashville Scene A thundering 9-piece ensemble from Asheville, NC, The Afromotive is escorting Afrobeat music into the modern age and taking the dance floor with them. Fueled by a powerful three-piece horn section and an unstoppable rhythm section, The Afromotive's musical dance excursions are steered by bandleader Kevin Meyame. Originally from Cote D'Ivoire, West Africa, Kevin has performed throughout West Africa and France with drum and dance troupe Tanably. He moved to Asheville, NC in 2004 to perform as lead dancer with Ballet Warraba, and as fate would have it, founded the musical collaboration that is the Afromotive. The music of Telepath lives in the haze between the live band and the DJ. Keyboardist/producer Michael Christie brings an arsenal of samples -- horn lines, rhythm guitars, Indian and Arabic musicians and vocalists -- and combines them with the energy and spontaneity of live musicians. Orchard Lounge is a collective of DJs that formed in Chicago around 2000. The trio of Ben Silver, Spencer Lokken, and Bethany Lokken, focus on performing for the more discerning of dance floors, and are commonly known to appeal to open-minded and diverse audiences. They've never let their passion for the beat confine them to a single genre, as their sets may include anything from laid back downtempo/IDM to hypnotic tech house and b-boy era electro. Don't be surprised if you hear an entire night of music dedicated to the sounds that have heavily influenced them as DJs either: they all share an affinity for classic hip hop, rock, funk, and soul, as well. This is the reasoning behind "OL: From the Dance Floor to the Couch". It's the appropriate defining phrase for the group because of their innate programming and record selection skills, as well as their talents in creating an experience for most any state of mind or environment. Some may label this as being versatile, however the three simply consider themselves serious music lovers with similar, albeit eclectic, interests. At the very core, they're highly enthusiastic individuals full of praise for the producers whose names appear on their records. To that end, they've always fully understood their role as middle(wo)man, and if they are to accept the coveted role of tastemaker, they want it to soley benefit the artists whom they all admire.           www.orchardlounge.com

Reigning from Mt. Kisco, NY, Digital Frontier is a four-piece electronica act. Venturing into the realm of sonic sound and wave manipulation, the quartet delivers a non-stop energetic performance of tranced out madness. Digital Frontier consists of the fraternal duo of Luke (bass) and Jesse Stocker (flute and synth), Matt Smilkstein (keys, synth), and Sol Montoya (drums). First performing in Vermont in April 2006, Digital Frontier has expanded its sound, producing tight compositions and digitally dance fueled beats.

Through a rigorous touring schedule throughout the Northeast, Digifront, as their fans dub them, has garnered a loyal and enthusiastic following.  Performing to sold out and packed clubs such as Club Metronome (Burlington, VT), The Knitting Factory (NYC), and Appalachain Brewing Company (Harrisburg, PA), Digifront has created a buzz unlike any upcoming electronica act.

There's something special that sets Digifront aside from the pack.  Perhaps it's Jesse's lush and melodic flute lines, maybe it's the pulsing and infectious rhythms of Sol.  The fact of the matter is that there is a unique symbiosis amongst this quartet, one that has left concert goers shocked by the unprecedented energy this live act delivers.  With influences ranging from Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Shpongle, The Disco Biscuits, and MSTRKRFT, Digital Frontier has set the stage for an exploratory and captivating career.

As music is an ever-evolving entity, this quartet is rapidly propelling it in the direction of the Digital Frontier.          www.digifrontmusic.com
